Whether you’re moving across the street or across the country, moving can be a hassle. But there are proven ways to minimize stress, confusion and damage when you leave one home for another.
If you’re going to move into a new home anytime soon, here are some ways you can make the move easier:
Tip #1: Start packing ahead of time.
Waiting until the last minute to pack is usually a bad idea that adds unnecessary stress. Start with the items you use the least and wait to pack the everyday use items last.
Tip #2: Use clothes to wrap fragile items.
There’s no need to waste money on bubble wrap. Use your clothes to wrap dishes and other breakables. Put glass wear inside clean socks.
Tip #3: Pack in layers.
Always pack the heaviest items on the bottom and the lightest items on the top. Putting crushed paper at the bottom of boxes is a great way to add cushioning.
Tip #4: Make sure each box is packed solid.
Don’t let your items shake or rattle inside your boxes and make sure to seal your boxes tightly.
Tip #5: Mark each box by location.
Put all kitchen items together. Likewise, pack living room items and bedroom items together. Mark each box accordingly. Using different color tape to color-code destinations will make it even easier to properly target the boxes when you reach your new home.
Tip #6: Number your boxes.
Number your boxes so you can keep track of them and know if any go missing. This can also be another way to know which items are in which box.
Tip #7: Remember to change your address.
This is something you should do at least two weeks before you actually move to make sure your mail is not still being sent to your old residence. This can be done online with the US Post Office.
